Surrounded by rolling countryside, with sheep grazing in neighbouring fields and some of North Pembrokeshire’s loveliest landscapes within easy reach, Bwthyn y Bugail is a place to slow down and switch off.
The characterful former farm building has been transformed into a welcoming holiday cottage while retaining a connection to its agricultural past. We caught up with the owners to discover more about its story, their favourite lesser-known corner of Pembrokeshire and why guests return to this peaceful part of the county.
Tell us a little about Bwthyn y Bugail.
Bwthyn y Bugail is our countryside holiday cottage and a place we really enjoy sharing with guests.
What we love most is the setting. You have far-reaching views across the rolling Pembrokeshire countryside and a real feeling of being away from it all, but you’re still within easy reach of the coast, beaches and beautiful villages.
We wanted to create somewhere families and friends could come together, properly switch off and have a peaceful base for exploring everything this part of Wales has to offer.

The cottage has an interesting history. What was it originally used for?
Something guests might not realise is that Bwthyn y Bugail was originally used to house sheep.
We’ve tried to retain the character of the original building while turning it into a comfortable and welcoming place to stay.
There’s still a lovely connection to that farming history today, as you can often see sheep grazing in the surrounding fields. It feels very much part of the landscape rather than separate from it.

What do you think makes staying here special?
It’s that combination of countryside and coast.
You can wake up surrounded by peaceful fields and countryside, then head out for a day exploring the coast, beaches and villages of North Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay.
Then, at the end of the day, you can come back to somewhere quiet and simply enjoy the views. We think it gives guests the best of both worlds.
We always ask our members for a favourite local spot. Where would you choose?
One of our favourite gems is the area around Abercych and the River Cych.
It’s wonderfully peaceful and can sometimes be overlooked by visitors who make a beeline straight for the coast. There’s something lovely about slowing down and discovering the river, woodland and countryside around here.
Nearby Cenarth Falls is also well worth exploring, particularly when the salmon are leaping. And, of course, when we do fancy a day by the sea, the beaches and scenery of North Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay are very hard to beat!
What do you enjoy most about welcoming visitors?
We love being able to share this special corner of Pembrokeshire with other people.
There are the places everyone knows and loves, but there are also so many quieter spots to discover. Having a peaceful countryside base gives guests the opportunity to explore a slightly different side of Pembrokeshire while still being close enough to enjoy the coast.

It sounds like your guests have become pretty fond of Bwthyn y Bugail too?
We’re incredibly proud of the feedback we receive from guests.
Bwthyn y Bugail has received the Customers’ Choice award every year since 2020, which means a lot to us.
Ultimately, we want people to arrive, feel comfortable straight away and have the chance to really relax and enjoy their time here. Knowing that our guests love the cottage and its setting as much as we do is incredibly rewarding.
Finally, what would you say to someone considering a stay in this part of Pembrokeshire?
Give yourself time to explore beyond the obvious places.
Head for the coast and enjoy those beautiful North Pembrokeshire beaches, but spend some time exploring inland too. Wander around Abercych, discover the River Cych, visit Cenarth Falls and enjoy simply being out in the countryside.
Sometimes the quieter corners are the ones that stay with you the longest.
