On the tiny island of Skomer, tens of thousands of Atlantic puffins arrive each spring to breed and raise their young. Just a short 15-minute boat ride from Martin’s Haven, Pembrokeshire, this remote Welsh island offers a rare chance to get close to puffins in their natural habitat — and it’s one of the most accessible places in the UK to do so.

Atlantic puffins, often referred to as the "clowns of the sea" due to their colourful beaks, are a major attraction for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers alike. The island serves as a protected habitat, allowing puffins to thrive without the threat of ground predators.

It’s April and our iconic Pembrokeshire Puffins are back on Skomer Island, busy preparing their underground burrows for mating season.

Did you know that each year a Puffin will shed its beak, growing a new one in its place?

Puffin beak shedding is a unique process not seen in any other bird species. The colours on a puffin’s beak fade through the year. Shedding restores the bright shades of red, orange, blue, and yellow which both male and female Puffins display during breeding season to help attract mates.
