What makes Llys-y-frân Lake special: a senior activity instructor's perspective

As a Senior Activity Instructor at Llys-y-frân Lake, I’m lucky enough to spend every working day in one of the most beautiful corners of Pembrokeshire. I’ve worked here for more than six years and, as someone who is passionate about watersports, I never take for granted the chance to get out on the water and help others do the same. One of the things I enjoy most is seeing visitors arrive, often stressed from busy lives, and leave feeling refreshed after spending a few hours outdoors. Whether it’s a gentle paddle across the lake or a walk around the lake, there’s something about being surrounded by nature that helps people switch off and recharge.

This summer has been particularly exciting as I’ve been leading the team behind the launch of our brand-new Aqua Park. From planning and installation through to staff training and opening day, it’s been fantastic to be part of bringing such a major new attraction to Llys-y-frân. The Aqua Park adds a whole new dimension to what we offer, giving families, friends and groups the chance to bounce, climb, slide and splash their way around a floating obstacle course. What’s been great to see is how everyone comes away smiling, it captures everything we want visitors to experience - fun and quality time outdoors.

Of course, the Aqua Park is just one part of the experience. Visitors can also enjoy kayaking, paddleboarding, canoeing, axe throwing, archery, Crazi-Bugz off roaders, cycling, bike hire and miles of scenic trails around the lake, before taking time to relax at the Lakeside Café. It’s one of my favourite spots to unwind after a busy day, with views across the water and plenty of options for a coffee, lunch or an ice cream. For those wanting to make even more of their visit, Lakeview Campsite offers the chance to stay right by the lake and wake up surrounded by the Pembrokeshire countryside.

As someone who enjoys being active outdoors, it’s great to see more people discovering our mountain biking trails and skills track, which provide a fantastic space for riders to build confidence, develop their technique at their own pace.

Llys-y-frân is a place where people can connect with nature, spend quality time together and enjoy the outdoors at their own pace. Living in Pembrokeshire, I know how lucky I am to have this landscape on my doorstep, and every season brings something different to enjoy.
