About Bwystfilod Aflan / Unclean beasts
Join SPAN at Small World Theatre for the thought-provoking production of Bwystfilod Aflan (Unclean Beasts) from Music Theatre Wales.
SPAN is delighted to bring you Bwystfilod Aflan (Unclean Beasts), a groundbreaking new production from Music Theatre Wales taking place at Small World Theatre. This innovative, touring, Welsh Language production blends opera, dance, and film to highlight the clash between tradition and change.
Inspired by Edward Prosser Rhys’s controversial 1924 Eisteddfod winning poem, ATGOF, Music Theatre Wales have collaborated with Music@Aber and Sinfonia Cymru to produce their new commission Bwystfilod Aflan, meaning Unlcean Beasts, for the National Eisteddfod. Bwystfilod Aflan will scrutinise the societal shockwaves triggered by ATGOF, probing into the changes within the country, its retained secrets, and the undercurrents of modernism. Prosser Rhys’s poem boldly depicted sex, lust, and a romance between two young men, challenging the societal norms of his time when homosexuality was still illegal. His work not only reflected his reality but also provoked a response that both rebuked and rewarded his creative expression, highlighting the era’s complexities and biases.
Bwystfilod Aflan is a Welsh language production directed by Jac Ifan Moore and designed by Elin Steele that features two parts: an operatic monodrama performed by tenor Elgan Llŷr Thomas and created by Conor Mitchell and Jac Ifan Moore, and a movement and voice reflection on ATGOF by Prosser Rhys created by Eddie Ladd, Sion Orgon, and Jac Ifan Moore and performed by Eddie Ladd.
