The Saturday race sees 60 elite athletes extreme canoeing between Abereiddy and Goodwick - riding 25km of big swells rolling in from the Atlantic. Paddling Ocean Skis (long, narrow, super-light kayaks) and Ocean Canoes (Hawaiian outriggers) in a test of fitness, stamina and skill as the boats reach speeds of over 20mph on the long waves.
At the finish line in front of Ocean Lab the athletes drop their boats at the water’s edge and run with their paddle the final yards past cameras and crowds to the finish gate on Goodwick’s parrog. There’s a brand new trophy and medals for all classes.
On Sunday there’ll be sprint races off the beach and back again, right beside the East Breakwater from where you’ll be able to watch the action unfolding. The Paddlesport Trade Fair will be open all weekend in the Ocean Lab car park where top level skis and canoes will be available to demo and local adventure companies are offering beginners’ try-it-yourself sessions in Kayaks and on Stand Up Paddleboards.
