Sir Peter Blake’s Under Milk Wood exhibition opens at Oriel y Parc

An exhibition of drawings and watercolours depicting Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood, by pop art legend Sir Peter Blake, received its official opening at Oriel y Parc Gallery and Visitor Centre in St Davids.

Llareggub: Peter Blake illustrates Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood, which features over 170 visual interpretations of the Welsh poet’s best loved play, will remain at Oriel y Parc until September 23rd.

The exhibition at Oriel y Parc, which is the home of Amgueddfa Cymru-National Museum Wales in Pembrokeshire, follows a celebrated run at National Museum Wales in Cardiff earlier in the year.

The evening included a performance by the Laugharne Players and an introduction by Sir Peter Blake himself.

Sir Peter Blake

Llareggub presents Thomas’ most famous play through the eyes of one of Britain’s most famous living artists, Sir Peter Blake. A pioneer of Pop Art in the 1960s, Blake’s diverse work includes oil paintings, watercolours, collages, constructions and prints, including the design for The Beatles’ Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album in 1967.

Sir Peter Blake said: “It was a pleasure to welcome so many people to the recent launch of my Under Milk Wood exhibition of drawings and watercolours at Oriel y Parc.

“This was my first visit to St Davids but I now understand why this corner of Wales has inspired so many artists and poets alike.”

The exhibition at Oriel y Parc includes three distinct groups of work: portraits of all the characters, a series of watercolours illustrating the dream sequences at the beginning of the play and a group of works described as ‘illustrations’, which includes scenes and locations from the play.

National Park Authority Chairman Cllr Mike James added: “It was an honour to welcome Sir Peter Blake to Oriel y Parc and St Davids for the launch of this spectacular exhibition.

“The exhibition provides yet another brilliant reason to plan a visit Oriel y Parc and explore the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park further.”

A number of events linked to the exhibition, Under Milk Wood and Dylan Thomas will be held in and around Oriel y Parc throughout the summer.

The next event will be a showing of the 1972 film adaptation of Under Milk Wood at 7pm on Thursday, June 5th. The film will be shown in the Discovery Room Cinema, at Oriel y Parc. Tickets £4, £3 concession.

Llareggub: Peter Blake illustrates Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood will be at Oriel y Parc until September 23rd 2014.

Just come back from a week’s break in St Davids - loved the area completely, and the local people are brilliant. Highly recommended is a boat trip to Ramsey Island.
