What’s On Summer Holidays

There are so many fabulous children’s events taking place this summer that we couldn’t list them all! So here’s a run-down of the best family days out across the county this August.

Most of the following venues have lots of family events happening throughout the month, so click on the links to see what takes your fancy.

Living History

Cilgerran Castle is putting on a Lammas Day event on the 1st August, where you can find out all about this wheat festival and make a corn dolly to take home!

If you want to train to be a knight Pembroke Castle is for you! Knight school, panic circus, teddy bear picnics, falconry displays and Keepers of the Castle are all on offer this August.

Meanwhile, over at Carew Castle you can join in medieval fun days, archaeology discovery days and have-a-go archery.

Castell Henllys have events going on throughout August. Explore the lives of our Iron Age ancestors with Arianrhod and find out if the good old days were really so good. Visit her in the fort and she'll be happy to take you on a tour as she tells you about her life, many moons ago.

On the Water

Join the National Trust for family friendly kayaking tours with Preseli Venture exploring the pristine North Pembrokeshire coastline. The National Trust’s paddling ranger will get you closer to the amazing wildlife, geology and history of the area.

Every Wednesday in August Skomer Island are running children’s island activity sessions. Bug hunts, nature rambles, rockpools and picnics – it’s all happening on Skomer!

Shearwater Week

Shearwater Week runs from the 20th – 27th August, where visitors can stay overnight on Skomer Island and witness the first flights of the Manx Shearwater chicks. Watch these incredible birds emerge at night from their burrows and take the first steps on a journey that will end in Argentina!

50 Things to Do Before Your 11¾ 

Every Wednesday in August the Stackpole National Trust team will be setting up camp at Middle Bay, near Stackpole Quay. Join the friendly education officers to complete many of the '50 Things' challenges - including rock pooling, den building and cooking on a camp fire. Suitable for the whole family.

Or head down to Colby Woodland Garden and join the National Trust team there for pond dipping and more challenges to tick off you ’50 things to do’ list.

The Welsh Wildlife Centre near Cardigan has lots of events taking place every week, including story telling, bat walks, bush craft and pond dipping.

For more woodland adventures head to Scolton Manor, where woodland exploring and Victorian games are happening in acres of parkland.

And if its seashore rambles, crab catching or art inspired craft days you seek head to the National Parks visitor centre at Oriel y Parc in St Davids.

St Davids Cathedral Explorers

5th, 12th, 19th, 26th August

Running at 11am and 2pm each Tuesday. Meet at the font and sign up for the family trail exploring the cathedral.

Narberth Children’s Festival

Saturday 16th August

This popular children’s festival is back on Saturday 16th August offering an educational, creative and fun day of workshops and performances - for free!

Tenby Summer Spectacular

3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th August

You know the summer has finally arrived when the fireworks fly down at the Tenby Summer Spectacular. Events take place every Sunday around the harbour with live music, entertainment, stalls and food and drink. The spectacular is weather dependant and starts around 3pm, finishing around 10pm.

Pembrokeshire County Show

19th – 21st August

Pembrokeshire County Show is where to meet the farmers, eat local food, watch horse jumping or fast car races, visit farm animals of all descriptions and check out the huge craft hall. Everything you could possibly want to know about living in the Pembrokeshire countryside in one field!  

Toad of Toad Hall

7th, 8th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 18th, 20th August

Mathry Community Hall is playing host to ‘Toad of Toad Hall’ this summer. Full of action, songs and loveable characters, accompanied by live music played with just as much joy and energy as the cast put into this well-loved play.

Mamma Mia Sunset Cinema

Wednesday 13th August

Picton Castle have an outdoor cinema evening planned on the south lawns of the Castle. There will be an outdoor screening of ‘Mamma Mia’ at dusk, doors open at 7pm. So bring along your summer feast, a blanket and sit back and enjoy!

The Three Musketeers

Monday 25th August

Bank Holiday Monday brings this family-friendly open-air show to Narberth Rugby Club. A perfect end the summer holidays! Tickets and enquiries to Span Arts
