What's on in May

The Preseli Beast is running & Dragon Boat’s are crashing across the water.

Fishguard is going folk & St Davids is getting classical. Plus plenty of good food, toe tapping gigs, a few laughs and lots, and lots, of bikes. It's a busy month.

Throughout May

The following venues have lots of family events happening throughout the month, so click on the links to see what takes your fancy.

Start spring with a visit to the Welsh Wildlife Centre in Cilgerran. They have lots of wildlife-orientated family friendly events going on throughout the month.

At National Park sites across Pembrokeshire there’s all sorts of family events happening this May, you can go Wild in the Woods, take part in a Legends Quest and celebrate dragons at Castell Henllys, while Carew Castle take you on a Legends of Carew treasure hunt and create some Medieval Mayhem!

Falconry days, the Merrymakers Knight School and Dragon Day are all happening in Pembroke Castle this month. 

Meanwhile the National Trust have lots of events on their ’50 things to do before your 11 ¾ ‘ series at Colby Woodland Gardens plus wildlife walks and fun runs at Stackpole.

Classic cars at the castle

Admire the finest classic and vintage cars from across south Wales descend on Carew Castle. Many other fun activities for families make this a great day out! Show included in normal admission. From 10am until 4pm

Picton Castle spring fair

A visit to Picton Castle’s annual spring plant and craft fair is the perfect way to get expert advice and beautiful plants from specialist growers, and to stock up on some unique gifts and crafts. From 10am

Wednesday 3rd May

Wildlife Walk

Discover Stackpole's resident wildlife on this early morning walk and talk around Bosherston Lakes. Wrap up warm and don’t forget your binoculars and camera. Afterwards enjoy a breakfast bap and hot drink at the Boathouse Tea-room. Booking details call 01646 623110

Haverfoodfest

Back for its third year, Haverfoodfest showcases the abundance of superb food and drinks producers from Pembrokeshire and surrounding areas. There will be lots of street food to sample, cookery demonstrations and not forgetting music, dance and a children’s marquee. Enjoy! Starts 10am

Saturday 6th May

Preseli Beast off road race 

The Preseli Beast is a 24 mile circular marked off road /fell running route with approx 4,700ft (1420m) of height gain -that’s nearly one and a half times the height of Snowdon right in the heart of the stunning Preseli Hills. Now in its fifth year, the race is part of the Welsh fell running championships but if that’s way too much try the Preseli Bach – its only 11 miles!

Thursday 11th May

Comedy club

The Queens Hall is the venue for Span Arts comedy club which this month sees Troy Hawke take the stage in a walking homage to the glorious thirties; Troy is a lovable fool stuck in the wrong era.  He will be joined by Paul McMullan with his own brand of quick fire comedy plus the evening will be compered by Susan Murray. Starts at 8pm. Tickets from Span Arts.

Bare Knuckle Parade

If you like Mumford & Sons you’re going to love these guys! Formed in pub, the guys have become a hit in their home town Bath. Early fans include Dermot O’Leary and Rhod Gilbert on Radio 2, plus appearances at Glastonbury Festival, Nass Festival and 2000 Trees Festival and support slots with the likes of James Bay, The Heavy and Enter Shikari makes this band one of the most exciting in the UK.

Saturday 20th – 21st May

Tour of Pembrokeshire

Bike, bikes and more bikes! The 10th Tour of Pembrokeshire will feature four fabulous new routes over two days. The Tour really encapsulates all that’s great about cycling; endless quiet country roads, breath-taking coastal scenery, challenging climbs, swooping descents and feed-stations with a magical atmosphere that showcase local produce.

Thursday 25th May

SpanJazz: Khamira

Khamira is a new project, featuring musicians from India and Wales fusing elements of Welsh folk, Indian Classical, jazz and rock – a truly unique World Music experience! See their first UK performance right here in Pembrokeshire. Start 8pm. Tickets from Span Arts.

Fishguard Folk Festival

Fishguard’s 18th Folk Festival brings together its unique mix of local talent and well-known performers to provide four days of songs, tunes and dance. Most events are still free, and whether you want to play, sing, dance or just watch and listen, there will be an events for you.

The Big Retreat Wales

St Davids Catherdral Festival

The St. Davids Cathedral Festival has been responsible for bringing classical music to the heart of West Wales for over 37 years. For ten days the Cathedral is host to a feast of classical and contemporary music concerts under the artistic direction of Oliver Waterer, the Organist and Master of the Choristers.

Sunday 28th May

Exploring Castlemartin Range

The Castlemartin Range is a jewel in the south of the National Park, and access is made available through the Ministry of Defence. The tour, by minibus, visits the farms at Flimston and Brownslade, and Frainslake Mill. There is a break for lunch, before the minibus travels to Linney Head. Booking essential 01437720392

Sunday 28th May

Welsh Dragon Boast Championships

Head to Llys-y-Fran Reservoir this Whitsun, where the 4th Welsh Dragon Boat Race hits the water to raise money for Pembrokeshire charities. Local teams, with 15 members in each boat, will be racing across Llys y Fran in a traditional Dragon Boat, rowing to the sound of the drummer at the helm. What a great family day out!
